Very Warm and Dry

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during August 2020 in Malaga was 31.1 Celsius (88F), and that was 1.2 Celsius (2F) above normal for the time of year. The average maximum was the highest in August since records began in 2005. The average minimum temperature was 22.8 Celsius (73F), and that was 0.2 Celsius (<0.5F) above normal for August.
The highest temperature recorded during the month was 41.5 Celsius (107F) on the 2nd. This was the second highest temperature ever recorded at this site, only bettered by the 41.6 Celsius (107F) recorded in August 2006. Unusually, there were 5 other days when the temperature exceeded 35 Celsius (95F). The 1st and 17th each had maxima just above 35 Celsius (95F), but the 3rd had a high of 38.4 Celsius (101F), with 37.7 Celsius (100F) and 37.4 Celsius (99F) recorded on the 22nd and 28th respectively. There were only 13 days when the temperature failed to reach 30 Celsius (86F), with 7 of these somewhat cooler days occurring after the 22nd. On 2 occasions, maximum temperatures were below 26 Celsius (79F). On the 20th a high of 23.6 Celsius (74F) occurred, with 24.4 Celsius (76F) measured on the last day of the month.
The usual number of warm and sultry nights occurred during August. On both the 2nd and 3rd minimum temperatures of 25.6 Celsius (78F) were recorded, with 25.5 Celsius (78F) on the 4th, and 25.2 Celsius (77F) on the 1st. The 5th and 11th both had lows of 25.1 Celsius (77F). Generally, the warmest nights were found towards the beginning of the month, but on most nights (25) the minimum was between 20 and 25 Celsius (68-77F). The only exception was the 20th when a low of 18.1 Celsius (65F) occurred.
The sea temperature was close to 26 or 27 Celsius (80F) for much of the month, but it began to decrease at the end of the third week, and the rest of the month had sea temperatures fluctuating between 20 and 23 Celsius (68-73F).

Rain

There were 1.1 millimetres (0.04 ins.) of rain during August. This was 76% of the monthly average. Measurable rain fell on 3 days. Rain fell early in the afternoon on the 10th and amounted to 0.3 millimetres (0.01 ins.). Showers overnight on the 11th gave 0.5 miilimetres (0.02 ins.) of rain, with the last ‘rain’ occurring on the 20th when sea mist and fog was damp enough to allow 0.3 millimetres (0.01 ins.) of rain to accumulate in the rain-gauge.

Thunder

There was a thunderstorm early in the afternoon on the 10th, with further thunder around mid morning on the 11th.

Wind

The pattern of winds was fairly unusual for August, with land breezes from the northwest more dominant than is normal for a late summer month, with cooling southeasterly sea breezes tending to develop somewhat later in the day than in a typical August. On most days, the wind was light or gentle, but on hot days the land breeze was often quite strong and gusty. The highest gusts were 22 knots (25 mph) on the 22nd and 21 knots (24 mph) on the 29th.

Fog

There was sea mist and patchy fog at times during the 20th, and sea mist also occurred for a while during the morning of the 23rd.
