The average maximum temperature during November 2018 in Malaga was 18.9 Celsius (66F), and that was 0.8 Celsius (1.5F) below normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 12.3 Celsius (54F), and that was 0.5 Celsius (1F) below normal for November. Overall, it was the coolest November in west Malaga for 10 years.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 21.7 Celsius (71F) on the 10th. This was the lowest monthly maximum for November since records began in 2005. There were only 4 other days when the temperature rose above 20 Celsius (68F), with the last of these warmer days occurring on the 16th. On most days, the temperature rose to between 17 and 20 Celsius (63-68F), but on 3 occasions maxima were below 17 Celsius (63F). The 2 coolest days of the month were the 21st and 22nd with highs of 15.8 Celsius (60F) and 16.3 Celsius (61F) respectively.

There were a few mild nights around the middle of the month, and on 3 occasions minima were above 15 Celsius (59F). On the 14th the temperature fell to 15.9 Celsius (60F), but the 16th and 17th were only slightly cooler with lows of 15.8 Celsius (60F) and 15.6 Celsius (60F) respectively. The coolest nights were at either end of the month, but only 3 nights had minima below 10 Celsius (50F). On the 6th a low of 9.2 Celsius (49F) was recorded with 8.6 Celsius (48F) measured on the 28th. However, the coolest night of the month was the 29th with a minimum temperature of 7.3 Celsius (45F).

The sea temperature was around 16 or 17 Celsius (61-63F) throughout the month.

There were 77.5 millimetres (3.1 ins.) of rain during November, and that was less than 10% below average for the month. Rain fell on 12 days, and that was 5 days above the monthly average. Only the November of 2012 had more rain days (15) since records began in 2005. The first 3 days of the month were dry, but wet fog produced 0.3 millimetres (0.01 ins.) of rain on the 4th. A wet morning on the 5th gave almost 4 millimetres (0.15 ins.) of rain, but the following 2 days were dry. Evening rain on the 8th continued into the early hours of the 9th, with a total of nearly 4 millimetres (0.15 ins.) again. Showers occurred on the 14th and 15th, but amounts of rain were small. After 2 dry days, heavy rain occurred late morning and early afternoon on the 18th. A total of 29.7 millimetres (1.2 ins.) fell, with showers, or longer spells of rain, falling on each of the following 5 days. Over 38 millimetres (1.5 ins.) of rain fell during this period, and included falls of 7 millimetres (0.3 ins.) on the 19th, almost 9 millimetres (0.35 ins.) on the 21st, and 15.2 millimetres (0.6 ins.) on the 23rd. Apart from light rain overnight on the 26th, which produced 0.3 millimetres (0.01 ins.), the remainder of the month was dry.

Thunder

There were 2 days with thunder during November. Frequent thunder and lightning occurred late morning and early afternoon on the 18th, although the main focus of the storms seemed to be to the west of Malaga. One rumble of thunder occurred during heavy rain just before mid morning on the 21st.

November was quite a breezy month with winds predominantly blowing from the northwest. There were a few southeasterly afternoon sea breezes, but these occurred with less than the usual frequency. Around the middle of the month there were 5 consecutive days when east or southerly winds dominated. On 8 days there were gusts exceeding 20 knots. The highest gust was 26 knots (30 mph) on the 18th.

There was fog observed very early on the 4th, but it had dispersed by mid morning.

The average maximum temperature during October 2018 in Malaga was 23.2 Celsius (74F), and that was 0.6 Celsius (1F) below normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 16.5 Celsius (62F), and that was 0.5 Celsius (1F) below normal for October. Overall, it was the coolest October in west Malaga for 6 years.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 31.8 Celsius (89F) on the 7th, but there were only 2 other days when the maximum exceeded 26 Celsius (79F). These were the first 2 days of the month, and included a high of 29.4 Celsius (85F) on the 1st. Most of the warm days occurred during the first 2 weeks of October, and of the 9 days when the temperature exceeded 25 Celsius (77F), only 1 occurred after the 13th. On the 22nd a high of 25.3 Celsius (78F) was recorded. Although it became generally cooler with time, the 19th, with a maximum of 19.6 Celsius (68F), was the only day when the temperature failed to reach 20 Celsius (68F) before the 28th. The last 4 days of the month were very cool with temperatures not reaching 18 Celsius (64F). The 31st had a high of 16.1 Celsius (61F), but it was the preceding day that was coolest. Persistent rain prevented the temperature from rising above 14.8 Celsius (59F), and that was the coolest October day since records began in 2005.

There were several warm and humid nights during early October. On 4 occasions the temperature remained above 20 Celsius (68F), with 2 nights sharing the highest minimum. On both the 1st and 8th the temperature only fell to 21.6 Celsius (71F). Night-time temperatures stayed above 15 Celsius (59F) until the 14th, but during the remainder of the month there were 8 occasions when minimum values dipped below 15 Celsius (59F). The 19th, with a low of 12.1 Celsius (54F), was the coolest night before the 28th, but the last 4 nights each produced minima below 11 Celsius (52F). The coolest nights were the 29th and 31st, with both having lows of 9.3 Celsius (49F).

The sea temperature was around 24 and 25 Celsius (75-77F) during the first week but fell to between 21 and 23 Celsius during the middle of the second week. It held up well for most of the remainder of October, but the last 4 days experienced a steady decline to 17 Celsius (63F) by the 31st.

There were 147.2 millimetres (5.8 ins.) of rain during October, and that was 270% of the average for the month. It was the wettest October since 2008, and was only 0.1 millimetre (<0.01 ins.) less wet than October 2008. Rain fell on 11 days, and that was 5 days above the monthly average. The first 8 days of the month, but a few light showers on the 9th gave less than 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.) of rain. On the morning of the 10th torrential rain fell with local flooding. The total was 35.8 millimetres (1.4 ins.), with much of the rain falling between 0800 and 0900 hours local time. Showery rain added another 7 millimetres (0.3 ins.) to the total on the 11th, but the following 2 days were dry. Rain, heavy at times, gave another 13 millimetres (0.5 ins.) on the morning of the 14th with showery rain producing nearly 2 millimetres (0.07 ins.) on the evening of the 15th. Light showers occurred early on the 16th, with heavy rain early on the 18th totalling over 23 millimetres (0.9 ins.). Showers gave small amounts of rain on the 20th and 28th, but the end of the month was very wet. The 30th was a particularly miserable day. Steady, often heavy, rain gave 38.9 millimetres (1.5 ins.), and after early sunshine, the last day of the month turned cloudy, then wet, with 23.9 millimetres (1 in.) to cap the very wet month.

Thunder

Not surprisingly, the wet weather produced several thundery outbreaks. the total of 6 ‘thunder’ days was the highest in October since records began in 2005. The first thunderstorm occurred on the afternoon of the 1st, with an especially thundery spell of weather lasting from the afternoon of the 9th through to mid morning on the 10th. Further thunder occurred mid to late morning on the 11th. Thunder was frequent, but often distant, on the morning of the 18th, with distant rumbles again on the morning of the 19th.

The typical east or southeasterly late morning and afternoon sea breezes occurred during the first week of October. Thereafter, northwesterly breezes were more dominant, with variations as thundery troughs disrupted the normal seasonal patterns. It was often windy, and even when local winds winds were light, large waves indicated strong winds not too far away. Gusts exceeded 20 knots (23 mph) on 9 days, and included readings of 28 knots (32 mph) on both the 19th and 28th, and 29 knots (33 mph) on the last day of the month.

No fog was observed in west Malaga during October.

The average maximum temperature during September 2018 in Malaga was 28.3 Celsius (83F), and that was 1.3 Celsius (2F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 21.7 Celsius (71F), and that was also 1.5 Celsius (2.5F) above normal for September. It was the warmest September in west Malaga since records began in 2005.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 32.8 Celsius (91F) on the 24th, but there were a further 5 days with highs above 30 Celsius (86F), including a maximum of 31.8 Celsius (89F) on the 6th. On most days (17) the temperature rose to between 27 and 30 Celsius (81-86F), but there were a few cooler days. However, there were only 3 occasions when the temperature failed to reach 26 Celsius (79F). The high on the 28th was 25.6 Celsius (78F), but on both the 8th and 13th a maximum of 23.8 Celsius (75F) was recorded.

There were many warm and humid nights during September. On both the 1st and 26th minima of 23.8 Celsius (75F) were measured, and there were 4 more nights when the temperature remained above 23 Celsius (73F). On most nights the temperature fell to between 20 and 23 Celsius (68-73F), but there were 3 nights when the minimum was below 20 Celsius (68F). On the 29th a low of 19.9 Celsius (68F) was recorded, but the coolest nights of the month were the 10th and 23rd with lows of 19.8 Celsius (68F).

The sea temperature remained between 24 and 25 Celsius (75-77F) throughout the month.

There were 6.1 millimetres (0.24 ins.) of rain during September, and this was only around 20% of the average for the month. Rain fell on 2 days, and that was 1 day below the monthly average. The first measurable rain since May 29th fell on the 8th. Showers, heavy at times in the afternoon, produced 5.1 millimetres (0.2 ins.) of rain. A sharp afternoon shower on the following afternoon gave another millimetre (0.04 ins.) of rain. There was a shower late evening on the 15th, but rain was not measurable, and the remainder of the month stayed dry.

Thunder

One of the showers on the afternoon of the 8th developed into a thunderstorm which rumbled on for about half an hour.

There are ongoing problems with the anemometer at the weather site, but the direction was mostly the usual southeast or northwest, with northwesterly land breezes occurring overnight and during mornings, with southeasterly sea breezes blowing on many afternoons and early evenings. Overall, the sea breezes were more prominent during the second half of September. No gusts above 20 knots (23 mph), however, this could have been because of the faulty measuring equipment. The highest gust was 19 knots (22 mph) recorded on both the 9th and 15th.

There was mist and patchy sea fog observed through much of the day on the 13th.

The average maximum temperature during August 2018 in Malaga was 30.3 Celsius (86F), and that was 0.5 Celsius (1F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 23.1 Celsius (73F), and that was also 0.5 Celsius (1F) above normal for August.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 34.2 Celsius (94F) on the 14th. This was the lowest monthly maximum for August since records began in 2005. There were a further 2 days when 33 Celsius (91F) was exceeded (the 6th and 7th), and on the 8th a maximum of 32.2 Celsius (90F) was recorded. On all other days, bar 1, the temperature rose to between 28 Celsius (82F) and 32 Celsius (90F). The exception was on the 29th when a high of 27.4 Celsius (81F) was measured. Interestingly, in the previous 13 years, there had always been a maximum temperature lower than this value.

The theme of no extremes of temperature was also apparent in minimum temperatures. On 5 nights the temperature remained above 24 Celsius (75F), with both the 11th and 12th having minima of 24.9 Celsius (77F). On most nights the temperature fell to between 22 and 24 Celsius (72-75F), but on 5 occasions the minimum was below 22 Celsius (72F). The coolest nights were generally towards the end of the month with 4 of the 5 lowest values occurring in the last 9 days of August. The coolest night was the 23rd with a minimum temperature of 21.6 Celsius (71F).

The sea temperature was between 24 and 25 Celsius (75-77F) throughout the month.

No rain was observed in west Malaga during August, although there were reports of light showers locally on the afternoon and evening of the 27th.

Thunder

There was a distant thunderstorm to the north early in the evening of the 27th.

Northwesterly winds on many mornings were followed by light or gentle southeasterly sea breezes during the afternoons. In a month of generally lighter winds than normal, the highest gusts were of 17 knots (19 mph) recorded on both the 10th and 14th.

There was no fog observed in west Malaga during August, although misty low cloud was observed on a few mornings.
