The average maximum temperature during July 2017 in Malaga was 28.2 Celsius (83F), and that was 1.3 Celsius (2F) below normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 21.1 Celsius (70F), and that was also 0.8 Celsius (1.5F) below the normal July value. Unusually, July was 0.5 Celsius (1F) cooler than June.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 32.8 Celsius (91F) on the 21st, but only 4 other days, the 9th, 17th, 18th and 20th, having maxima above 30 Celsius (86F). The 17th was the warmest of these 4 days with a high of 31.6 Celsius (89F). On most days (22) temperatures peaked at between 26 and 30 Celsius (79-86F), but on 3 occasions the temperature failed to reach 25 Celsius (77F). On the 24th a high of 24.8 Celsius (77F) was recorded, but the coolest days of the month were the 1st and 6th, these both having maxima of 24.7 Celsius (77F).

As usual, there were many warm nights during July, but with no exceptionally warm nights. There was only 1 night when the temperature stayed above 23 Celsius (73F), and that was the 20th with a minimum of 24.3 Celsius (76F). On most nights, minima were between 20 and 23 Celsius (68-73F), but with 6 nights having lows under 20 Celsius (68F). The first 3 nights of the month were the only ones to have minima below 19 Celsius (66F), and the 2nd, with a low of 17.6 Celsius (64F), was the only night with a minimum temperature below 18 Celsius (64F).

The sea temperature was a chilly 18 Celsius (64F) at the beginning of the month, and briefly dipped to 16 Celsius (61F). Although a recovery to between 20 and 22 Celsius (68-72F) occurred at the end of the first week, no further increase meant that sea temperatures stayed below average by 2 or 3 degrees Celsius (3-5F).

There was no rain in west Malaga during July, although a few spots from unstable high-level cloud occurred around Malaga on the 17th.

There were no reports of thunder in west Malaga during July.

The wind through July mainly followed a typical early summer pattern with northwesterly land breezes for a while during the mornings, followed by southeasterly sea breezes, these usually dying away after sunset. The difference from normal was that winds were lighter, with no gusts exceeding 17 knots (19 mph). On the 16th, the highest gust was just 1 knot! Unsurprisingly, this was the ‘calmest’ day since records began in 2005.

There was misty low cloud on the mornings of the 14th, 15th and 26th, with thick fog early on the 29th, although this had cleared by mid morning.

The average maximum temperature during June 2017 in Malaga was 28.7 Celsius (84F), and that was 1.8 Celsius (3F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 21.0 Celsius (70F), and that was also 1.8 Celsius (3F) above the normal June value. It was the warmest June since records began in 2006.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 35.2 Celsius (96F) on the 27th, but there were 8 other days when the temperature rose above 30 Celsius (86F), including a high of 33.4 Celsius (92F) on the 5th and 32.0 Celsius (90F) on the 26th. Only 1 of the warmer days occurred before mid month. There were no particularly cool days during June; in fact only 5 days had maxima below the usual June average of 26.9 Celsius (81F), with all of these cooler days occurring before mid month. There were only 2 days when the temperature stayed below 25 Celsius (77F), the 3rd, with a high of 24.1 Celsius (75F), and the 9th, when 23.7 Celsius (75F) was recorded.

There were many warm nights during June, with the majority of the warmer nights occurring after mid month. On the 25th the temperature only fell to 25.1 Celsius (77F), and although the next warmest night was 23.2 Celsius (73F), there were a further 17 nights when the temperature remained above 20 Celsius (68F). There were 11 nights when the temperature fell below 20 Celsius (68F), with only 1 of these cooler nights occurring after the 13th. The 30th was the third coolest night of the month with a minimum of 19.1 Celsius (66F), but the joint coolest nights were the 7th and 10th when lows of 18.4 Celsius (65F) were recorded.

The sea temperature, around 19 or 20 Celsius (66-68F) at the beginning of the month, steadily rose to a warm 23 or 24 Celsius towards the end of June. However, right at the end of the month an upwelling of cold water occurred and the sea temperature dipped to a chilly 18 or 19 Celsius (64-66F).

There was no rain in west Malaga during June.

There were no reports of thunder in west Malaga during June.

The wind through June mainly followed a typical early summer pattern with northwesterly land breezes for a while during the mornings, followed by southeasterly sea breezes, these usually dying away after sunset. On the warmer days, especially during the last week, the land breezes either persisted all day, or were pushed aside for a while in the afternoon by gusty southwesterly winds running parallel to the beach. On most days the wind was light or gentle, but moderate breezes occurred during the first week, and again during the last week, when the only 3 gusts exceeding 20 knots (23 mph) occurred. On both the 28th and 29th there were gusts of 23 knots (26 mph).

There was misty low cloud on the morning of the 20th, but no fog was observed in west Malaga.

The average maximum temperature during May 2017 in Malaga was 24.5 Celsius (76F), and that was 0.7 Celsius (1F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 16.1 Celsius (61F), and that was 0.1 Celsius (0.2F) below the normal May value.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 30.1 Celsius (86F) on the 18th, and perhaps surprisingly, the only other maximum above 26 Celsius (79F) was the 28.2 Celsius (83F) recorded on the 29th. On most days (24) maxima were between 23 and 26 Celsius (73-79F), and remarkably, on 5 of the last 8 days of May the temperature peaked at precisely 25.4 Celsius (78F). There were no particularly cool days during the month, with the coolest days all confined to the first half of May. On the 2nd, the temperature only reached 21.1 Celsius (70F), with the following day only 0.1 Celsius (o.2F) less cool..

There were several mild nights during May, and as is usually the case, most of these occurred during the second half of the month. On the 28th a minimum of 20.3 Celsius (68F) was measured, with 19.4 Celsius (67F) recorded on the 30th. There were 11 other nights when the temperature remained above 17 Celsius (63F), but only 1 of these milder nights occurred before the 19th. On the 10th a low of 17.2 Celsius (63F) was logged. There were no especially cool nights, although on 9 occasions minima were below 15 Celsius (59F). Only 1 of these cooler nights occurred after mid month, the 17th, when 14.9 Celsius (59F) was measured. The early part of the month had the coolest nights with 7 of the opening 9 nights of May having minima below 15 Celsius (59F). However, only 2 of these cooler nights had minimum temperatures below 13 Celsius (55F). On the 4th a low of 12.3 Celsius (54F) was recorded, but the previous night was cooler with a reading of 11.8 Celsius (53F).

The sea temperature, around 17 or 18 Celsius (63-64F) at the beginning of the month, slowly rose to 19 or 20 Celsius (66-68F) by the end of May.

There were 24.4 millimetres (0.96 ins.) of rain during May, and that was 13% above average. However, there were only 2 days with rain, and that was 2 days below the average. Showery rain on the 11th produced 1.5 millimetres (0.06 ins.) of rain, with heavy rain on the morning of the 12th producing the remainder of the month’s total.

Occasional thunder and lightning occurred for nearly an hour on the morning of the 12th in association with the heavier rain.

The wind through May mainly followed a typical late spring pattern with northwesterly land breezes for a while during the mornings, followed by southeasterly sea breezes, these usually dying away after sunset. On the warmer days, the land breezes persisted longer, but overall breezes were generally lighter than normal, and only the warmest day of the month, the 18th, recorded a gust above 20 knots (23 mph) and then only 21 knots (24 mph). There were a few afternoons when brisk southwesterly winds blew along the shoreline and lifted the sand, making it unpleasant for those sunbathing.

There was no fog observed in west Malaga during May, although visibility was significantly reduced under low cloud cover early on both the 23rd and 27th.

The average maximum temperature during April 2017 in Malaga was 21.2 Celsius (70F), and that was 0.2 Celsius (0.3F) above normal for the time of year. The average minimum temperature was 13.6 Celsius (57F), and that was 0.2 Celsius (0.3F) below the normal April value.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 32.3 Celsius (90F) on the 15th, and this was the warmest April day in the area for 15 years. The temperature reached 28.3 Celsius (83F) on the 14th, but the only other day when the temperature exceeded 25 Celsius (77F) was the 26th when 25.6 Celsius (78F) was recorded. On most days (16) maximum temperatures were between 20 and 24 Celsius (68-75F), but there were several cool days, these mainly occurring at either end of the month. There were 11 days with maxima below 20 Celsius (68F) including the 5 consecutive days between the 6th and 10th. Only 2 days had highs below 17 Celsius (63F), with both these cooler days occurring at the end of the month. On the 28th a maximum of 16.4 Celsius (61F) was recorded, but the coolest day was the 29th when the temperature only reached 15.5 Celsius (60F).

There were several mild nights during April, with these all occurring from the 14th onwards. On the 14th, a minimum of 17.6 Celsius (64F) was recorded, but this was only the second mildest day. On the 15th, the temperature failed to fall below 19.4 Celsius (67F), and this was highest April minimum recorded at this site in records going back 11 years. There were no minima above 15 Celsius (59F) before mid month, but a further 7 days with temperatures remaining above 15 Celsius (59F) occurred after mid month. All the cool nights occurred before mid month, with no minima below 13 Celsius (55F) after the 13th. Before the 14th, there were 11 nights with lows under 13 Celsius (55F), and they were consecutive nights between the 3rd and 13th. This sequence included 3 nights with temperatures dipping under 10 Celsius (50F). The 3rd, 4th and 5th were the coolest nights, with the 5th just the coolest at 9.2 Celsius (48F).

The sea temperature, around 16 Celsius (61F) at the beginning of the month, rose to 17 or 18 Celsius around mid month before briefly dipping to 16 Celsius (61F) again on the 28th.

There were 32.1 millimetres (1.3 ins.) of rain during April, and that was nearly 30% below average. Apart from a little rain, too little to measure, on the afternoon of the 24th, it was completely dry until the 28th. In the early hours of the 28th there was a brief spell of torrential rain, followed by a day of occasional mostly light rain. The total was 22.9 millimetres (0.9 ins.). Further heavy rain fell in the early hours of the 29th with over 9 millimetres (0.35 ins.) recorded. The rain petered out during the day, and the 30th was a dry and sunny day.

There was a rumble of thunder in conjunction with the heavy rain overnight on the 28th.

The wind through April mainly followed a typical early spring pattern with northwesterly land breezes for a while during the mornings, followed by southeasterly sea breezes, these usually dying away after sunset. On the warmer days, mainly around mid month, the land breezes persisted throughout the day, and during the third week the southeasterly wind persisted at times during the night. The exception to the normal spring wind regime occurred on the 28th and 29th when a wild easterly Levanter developed and persisted for around 48 hours. Gusts on the evening of the 27th reached 30 knots (34 mph) and on both the 28th and 29th gusts of 37 knots (44 mph) occurred. The only other reports of gusts in excess of 20 knots (23 mph) occurred on the 20th and 21st when readings of 28 knots (32 mph) and 24 knots (28 mph) occurred. However, these winds drove ashore waves of up to 8 metres (26 feet), and extensive coastal defences damage occurred along the Costa del Sol.

There was no fog observed in west Malaga during April.
